Lot details Registration No: EH 1975 Chassis No: 4945 Mot Expiry: None
The British Swift concern manufactured motorcars in Coventry from 1900 to 1931. Up to 1907 they were powered by proprietary engines from De Dion Bouton etc, but Swift then began making its own powerplants to the design of Works Engineer William Radford, and the 1914 two-seat Tourer on offer is equipped with a Radford-designed 10hp four-cylinder engine.
With WWI in progress, 'EH 1975' was finished in Khaki and reportedly sent to France where it served as an 'Officer's Runabout'. On return to the UK it is understood to have been repainted Grey and Black and sold to its first private owner by a Stoke-on-Trent garage in 1920. It has never left that area since, and has been in the hands of the vendor for the last 52 years. During that time it has benefited from two engine overhauls, a repaint into its current colour scheme of Yellow over Black, reupholstered in Green button leather, equipped with a new hood etc. The vendor now regards the bodywork as "very good, with no obvious rot in the original frame", the paintwork and interior trim as "nice and mellow" and the four-cylinder engine and three-speed gearbox as "sound". He additionally notes that, while the second gear is "noisy", it's apparently been that way for 50 years! A much loved, enjoyed and rare period motorcar.
