A significant step in terms of 'Big Healey' evolution and foundation block for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars, the 3000 MKI was introduced during March 1959. Powered by an enlarged 2912cc version of BMC's C-Series straight-six engine that developed some 124bhp and 167lbft of torque, it could be had in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 seater (BT7) configurations. Progressively improved, the 3000 metamorphosed through MKII and MKIIa guises before the arrival of the ultimate MKIII BJ8 in October 1963. Boasting a centre console, proper convertible hood, wood veneer dashboard, redesigned exhaust system and wind-up windows, the four-seater BJ8 proved a comfortable and fast grand tourer. With engine output boosted to 148bhp and 165lbft of torque thanks to a new camshaft and better valve springs etc, its reputed 124mph top speed was accessed via a four-speed manual gearbox. Last of the line, the Phase Two variant benefited from redesigned rear suspension, strengthened splined hubs and larger diameter front disc brakes.

This particular example is accompanied by some wonderful paperwork including its `Body Production Windscreen Card' which reveals that chassis HBJ8-32428 was originally finished in Ivory White with a Black soft-top and Black Ambla trim (plus such desirable extras as a heater, tonneau cover and overdrive). An `Extract From Register Recording The Use Of Limited Trade Licences' shows that the home market car was driven from Oxford to supplying dealer Mann Egerton & Co Ltd of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on 19th August 1965. Road registered as `CGV 578C' the following day, the first (and only) owner listed in its green logbook is Eric Bulling Esq. of Holme Hale, Norfolk. Subjected to its initial MOT examination by Botwoods Ltd of Bury St Edmunds on 20th August 1968 (the associated `Brake Efficiency Recorder Test Card' from which remains on file), the four-seater is presumed to have remained in Mr Bulling's care until the 1980s.

Although undated a letter he wrote to the `Proposed Buyer' makes for interesting reading: "I bought this Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII new in 1965. I drove this car for several years and then it was stored in my garage. The car has been completely checked over by Mr D.C. Gaskins of South Green Garage, Mattishall. A new clutch has been fitted, the engine being completely checked. New shock absorbers fitted to front, also part exhaust system renewed. Whoever purchases this car, I hope will have as much pleasure in driving this car as I have had". It might be no more than coincidence but the sportscar's second oldest surviving MOT certificate was issued by the Wymondham Recovery Service on April 29th 1987 at a recorded mileage of 37,533 (Wymondham is approximately nine miles from Mattishall village).

Acquired by its penultimate keeper, John Flaherty Esq. of Southend-on-Sea, during July that same year, `CGV 578C' relocated to the West Country half a decade ago. Assorted MOT certificates granted between 1988 and 2010 show an increase in mileage readings from 38,038 to 43,607. Citing the way it looks, feels and drives as proof, the vendor is confident that the Austin-Healey has covered just 45,000 miles from new. Nicely repainted at some stage, the 3000 MKIII has never been allowed to deteriorate to the point of needing restoration. The four-seater's panel fit is notably good, while an inspection of its boot lid aperture reveals that the factory-fitted rubber grommets and panel rivets are still in situ. Pleasingly, the Black Ambla upholstery is original as is the hood (though, the latter has had a new zip fitted and its frame re-webbed).

Treated to routine servicing by Ivor Webb & Son Ltd of Cirencester and John Chatham Cars of Bristol over the last few years, `CGV 578C' has also benefited from a waxoyl treatment (March 2007), carburettor overhaul (April 2008) and the fitment of new 72-spoke 5.5 x 15 wire wheels and tyres (July 2008). Described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork, this delightful Big Healey is offered for sale with the aforementioned documentation and MOT certificate valid until June 2011.
