Mixing and matching Porsche 911 parts to create ever more potent sports cars is a time-honoured tradition, and an exercise the factory has been carrying out ever since the model's launch in 1963. Important landmarks in the 911's evolutions included moving the rear wheels back with arrival of the B-series 911 in August 1968, which improved weight distribution and handling, and the performance E and S models receiving Bosch high-pressure mechanical fuel injection, greatly increasing engine flexibility and power. Capacity had gradually crept up from 2 litres to 2.2, 2.4 and then 2.7 litres for the best-loved of all the 'small-bumper' 911s, the lightweight Carrera 2.7 RS (for Rennsport, or racing), whose 210bhp output could propel the car to 150mph. Even more potent were the factory developments of the RS, the 2.8 and 3.0 RSR with more than 300bhp.
This RSR recreation started out as a 1972 911E, which was transformed by renowned Porsche racer Paul Edwards into a 2.7 RS replica in 2002, and raced by him for three years, becoming known as the car to beat in Porsche Club and Aston Martin Owners' Club meetings. Late in 2007, it was converted to wide-body 3.0 RSR specification, including twin-plug cylinder heads, as a handful of the original 2.7 RS cars had been by the factory. As well as the period-correct Fuchs alloy wheels, this highly competitive 911 comes with a set of BBS race split rims and is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition. Potentially eligible for Masters series racing and the Le Mans Classic, this well developed Porsche is offered for sale with an FIA Historic Technical Passport.
