Lot details Registration No: PH 5073 Chassis No: GRJ 69 Mot Expiry: Aug 2006
Launched in 1922 to meet the buying public's demand for a smaller, more manageable Rolls-Royce, the 20HP was nevertheless built to the same exacting standards as the marque's flagship Silver Ghost 40/50HP. A factor that somewhat limited / negated the profitability of the less expensive 'baby' Rolls. In keeping with contemporary advances in car design on both sides of the Atlantic, the 20HP featured unit construction of its engine and gearbox as well as a 'Hotchkiss drive' rear axle. Its 3,127cc straight six powerplant was notably refined despite being the first Rolls-Royce engine to utilise overhead valves. Updated in 1925, the model benefited from the fitment of all round drum brakes and a four-speed, right-hand gear change.
Finished in blue over black with black leather upholstery, this particular example is believed to have had just four owners. The subject of an extensive restoration in 1971 during which it was handsomely rebodied by I Wilkinson & Son Ltd of Derby, it is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition (engine, chassis, gearbox, interior trim, bodywork and wheels / tyres) with a "superb coachpainted finish". Modelled after one of Barker's famed 'barrel-sided' designs, it has apparently been "little used in the last ten years". Though, recent work has seen it profit from a new radiator core. Equipped with both a town cap and 'Flying Lady' mascot, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until August 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until January 2006, while, its "large history folder" includes a "buff logbook" together with "letters and bills going back many years".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
