Previously something of a one horse race, the Pony car market exploded in 1967. Faced with opposition from the new Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and revamped Plymouth Barracuda, Ford had little choice but to redesign its iconic entrant. Boasting a wider track and notably more secure handling, the 1967-model year Mustang also featured improved seating and clearer instrumentation. Visually distinguished by its larger front grille, deeper side scallops and concave taillights, it could be specified with anything from a 200ci (120hp) straight-six to a 390ci (315hp) 'big block' V8. Updated the following season with federally mandated side marker lights and a revised grille, the 1968-model year was also notable in Mustang terms for the introduction of the 302ci Windsor 'small block' V8. A highly versatile unit that would remain in production until 2001, it was quoted as developing 220bhp and 300lbft of torque even when fed with the base 'two barrel' carburettor. Thus, while not as potent as the Highland Green 390ci Fastback that Lt. Frank Bullitt (a.k.a. Steve McQueen) thrashed round the streets of San Francisco, a 1968 Ford Mustang 302ci Notchback was still a fast car.
Finished in red with black vinyl upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its 302ci (5.0litre) V8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to be a "very good, reliable driving car", 'XYY 327F' is understood to have been "totally restored" during 1991. Very well presented, it is offered for sale with a history file (rebuild invoices / photographs etc), MOT certificate valid until October 2006 and historic class (free) road tax.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
