Having launched the technically refined MKX in 1961, Jaguar was concerned that the perennial MKII might seem outmoded by comparison, so set out to create a more sophisticated and luxurious version. Called the S-Type, it was available with either 3.4 or 3.8-litre twin carburetter versions of the ubiquitous XK DOHC engine and sold from 1963 to 1968. The visual differences included: longer rear bodywork and extended rear roofline, which gave rise to a larger boot and more rear seat headroom respectively; slimline bumpers front and rear; deeper rear mudguards in place of the MKII spats. The major technical change was the adoption of independent rear suspension (an adaptation of the MKX system), though the newcomer also featured a higher-geared Burman power steering set up and an updated heating and ventilation system. The more sumptuous interior included a MKX style walnut facia and wider front seats etc.
The right-hand drive S-Type offered, left Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in 1964 equipped with the more powerful 3.8-litre engine mated to an overdrive specification manual gearbox. Originally finished in Grey, it was resprayed in opalescent British Racing Green in the late 1990s as part of an extensive restoration carried out by renowned marque specialist Don Law - the total cost of which was £64,000. Two years ago, '6535 VT' was treated to a dual fuel conversion, so can now run on LPG as well as petrol. We understand the vendor is the fourth owner of the Jaguar and he informs us that his predecessor never actually used the car - the indicated, but unwarranted, mileage now stands at 92,801. He currently considers the bodywork, engine and manual transmission to be "excellent" and the paintwork and Red leather interior trim to be "very good". The Jaguar is taxed and MOT'd into March. A fine looking example of this increasingly sought after model.
