1935 Alvis Speed 20 SC Lancefield Drophead Coupe

Sold for £63,000

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: BYY 902
Chassis No: 12082
Mot Expiry: Jan 2014

Despatched to Lancefield on March 9th 1935, chassis 12082 is reputedly one of just four Alvis Speed 20SC cars that the London firm clothed with Drophead Coupe coachwork. Road registered as `BYY 902' on August 13th 1935, the four-seater was supplied new to E.G. Eaglesfield Esq. of Cavendish Hill, Carlisle via Charles Follet Ltd. Other keepers known to the Alvis Owners Club include: E.G. Brickell Esq., H. White Esq., M. Newbury Esq., Dr H Watson, Dr R.F. Walters, M.T. Palfreyman Esq. and A. Willis Esq. As a SC derivative of the highly successful Speed 20 series, it benefits from a 2.7-litre straight-six OHV engine, four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, independent front suspension and fourteen-inch drum brakes. A great expression of the coachbuilder's art, its Lancefield Drophead Coupe coachwork features a nicely engineered hood mechanism, pull-out boot, prominent swage line, full flowing wings and wind-up windows.

The subject of an extensive `chassis up' restoration by Dr H. Turner that began in 1989 and continued for the best part of a decade, `BYY 902' had attention paid to its engine, gearbox, back axle, steering, suspension, aluminium bodywork, upholstery, brightwork, electrical equipment and brakes. Much of the work is chronicled in an accompanying journal and correspondence file (the latter demonstrating Dr Turner's keen eye for detail). Understood to have covered just 3,400 miles since its rejuvenation was completed, chassis 12082 started readily upon inspection and remains highly presentable. Fettled by Mike Fisher Restoration Ltd during September/October 2003 whilst in Mr Palfreyman's care and fitted with correct-type JP pistons by Mr Willis during late October 2005, the Speed 20SC has been in the current ownership since June 2006. Driven some 800 miles during the last seven years, the Drophead Coupe has been further improved via the addition of a period tool kit, new battery (January 2013) and front shock absorbers (July 2011).

Riding on black-painted wire wheels, this matching (chassis and engine) numbers Speed 20SC Lancefield Drophead Coupe is one of the smartest Alvis cars we have had the pleasure of offering. A true Post Vintage Thoroughbred that would cost far more than its guide price to restore today, `BYY 902' is accompanied by a large history file, restoration photographs and MOT certificate valid until January 27th 2014.
