In 1933 the Singer Nine sporting 4-seater was entered in the Le Mans 24-hours race, the rear seat replaced with a much larger 18-gallon fuel tank and the car finishing in 13th place overall. The model was also the first unsupercharged British motor car of under 1000cc capacity ever to qualify for the Rudge Whitworth Cup.
The Nine's 4-cylinder engine had a capacity of 972cc, an overhead camshaft, two Solex downdraught carburettors and an extractor exhaust manifold. With the nominal 9 horsepower rating, the power output in modern currency equates to 31bhp at 4800rpm. Transmission consisted of a single dry-plate clutch and a 4-speed gearbox, brakes were hydraulically-operated, whilst, impressively, fuel consumption was claimed to be up to 35mph
The current owner has run this example of the Singer Nine sports for the past seven and a half years, during which time it has completed 10,000 trouble-free miles. Claimed still to be largely original, the exhaust valves have been updated with 25% nickel chrome valves to better accommodate unleaded petrol. Chassis and bodywork are said to be very good and the white paintwork good. The red interior is in good condition and both motor and gearbox reportedly in good order. The open 4-seater also comes with full weather equipment, an MOT which will not need renewing until September and a tax-exempt disc which does not expire until next January.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
