William Morris was one of Britain's greatest pioneering motor manufacturers. Not only did he foresee the huge demand for private transport but he also revolutionised concepts of both marketing and production in order to satisfy it. Introduced in 1926, the 'Flatnose' Morris drew heavily on the design of its much-loved 'Bullnose' predecessor. Built on a light yet sturdy leaf-sprung ladder chassis and powered by a choice of two torquey four-cylinder sidevalve engines (11.9hp Cowley or 14hp Oxford) mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, it tackled the primitive period road network with aplomb. Famed for their durability, many 'Flatnoses' remained in regular use after WW2.
Finished in blue over black with blue rexine upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "unrestored / original" (coachwork, paintwork), "fair" (interior trim) or "serviceable" (engine, manual gearbox, electrical equipment) condition. Entering the current ownership in 1977, `MU 1838' is said to have proven "an excellent, unmolested and reliable Flatnose". A veteran of numerous shows and rallies, the Morris rides on artillery wheels and even retains a dashboard-mounted enamel plaque from its original supplier. Sidelined by other projects, the Cowley has been off the road since 2005. However, it is hoped but not guaranteed that this charming Vintage saloon will possess a fresh MOT certificate and tax disc by the time of the sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
