Amid rumours that several States were preparing to ban his Model T on safety grounds (its hand operated braking system being deemed dangerous), Henry Ford finally succumbed to pressure from his son Edsel and in July 1926 authorised development of a successor. Introduced to the public on 2nd December 1927, the Model A was greeted with unprecedented demand. Its chassis was longer and lower slung than that of the Model T and while it still retained transverse leaf front and rear suspension it proved a significant advance. Designed by Howard Hicks, its 3285cc, L-Head four cylinder engine developed 40bhp (twice the Model T's output) and boasted coil ignition and an integral water pump. Mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, it gave the new model a top speed of 65mph necessitating the fitment of four-wheel drum brakes.
Finished in blue over grey with grey upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Thought to have been manufactured in America prior to being assembled in Canada and shipped to Zimbabwe, it is reputed to have spent most of its life on a Western Cape wine estate. Discovered there, laid-up in a shed, it was bought by vintage car restorers Frost Bros. of Knysna, South Africa in 2002. Imported to Scotland by the present owner, this four-door (hence 'Fordor') sedan's present MOT certificate is valid until May 9th 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
