Lot details Registration No: SV 4887 Chassis No: 29329828 Mot Expiry: June 2010
Brainchild of GM President Alfred Sloan and his board, the Pontiac marque was founded in 1926. Debuting at that year's New York Motor Show, its first model - the Series 6-27 - featured a sturdy 110-inch wheelbase chassis frame equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension and rear-wheel drum brakes. Able to boast a one-piece cast-iron cylinder block, three-bearing crankshaft and two separate cylinder heads, the newcomer's 186.7 cu in (3059cc) sidevalve engine developed a reputed 40bhp @ 2,400rpm plus plentiful torque. Allied to three-speed manual transmission, the straight-six unit enabled the Pontiac to carry a range of closed coachwork (a comparative novelty at the time) whilst maintaining decent performance. With up-to-the-minute styling and rugged mechanicals, the Series 6-27 accounted for some 76,472 sales in its first twelve months. Indeed, such was the model's success that GM authorized the construction of a new $15million assembly plant in Pontiac, Michigan. Arriving in late 1927 for the following model year, the Series 6-28 utilised an improved cross-flow radiator design and sported the famous Indian head in silhouette emblem which was to remain the standard Pontiac logo for almost thirty years. Another strong seller, the Series 6-28 could be had with a variety of open and closed bodystyles not to mention four-wheel drum brakes.
Finished in green over black with green cloth upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment) or "excellent" (coachwork, paintwork, interior trim) condition. Said to have been "extensively restored in Arkansas during the late 1980s and later purchased by a UK collector who kept it until recently", `SV 4887' is further understood to have benefited from some recommissioning work earlier this year. Reportedly capable of an indicated 55mph, a respectable figure for a Vintage car, the Pontiac is believed to be a rare survivor and possibly the only one of its kind resident in the UK. Riding on artillery wheels, this attractive Doctor's Coupe is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 2010.
