Functioning as either the first rung on the Hispano-Suiza ownership ladder or a possible tender to one of the marque's grander offerings (when the journey in question was too trivial or private to bother the chauffeur) the 8/10CV T24 was introduced during 1914. Although, similar in layout to its 12/15CV predecessor, the newcomer benefited from the adoption of a leather-lined cone clutch, four-speed manual gearbox and semi-elliptic leaf-sprung rear suspension. However, the real advance lay under its bonnet. Despite being smaller than that fitted to the 12/15CV (1848cc vs 2212cc), Marc Birkigt's engineering prowess ensured that the T24's four-cylinder sidevalve engine was some fifty percent more powerful (30hp vs 20hp). Reputedly capable of revving to 3,000rpm, the newer unit boasted a Bosch magneto, pressure lubrication, redesigned combustion chambers and valves inclined at a seven-degree angle. Bodied by Hispano-Suiza as well as outside coachbuilders, the model was typically capable of some 70 - 80 km/h. Manufactured in both France and Spain, it remained current until 1922 by which time some 450 are thought to have been made. Although, the number of survivors has been guess-timated at just ten!
Finished in light green over black with black upholstery, this particular example has been on static display in a Danish museum since the late 1980s. Consequently said to require recommissioning, it nevertheless appears to be substantially complete. A Spanish built 'Serie 1' car as evidenced by its Guadalajara chassis plate, the origins of its attractive Runabout coachwork are unknown. Sporting an oil pressure gauge, brass windscreen surround, rear-mounted spare wheel and attractive body mouldings, this delightful 8/10CV T24 would make a welcome addition to any Hispano-Suiza (or other grand marque) collection.
PLEASE NOTE: To the best of our knowledge, the Hispano-Suiza 8/10CV T24 was manufactured between 1914 and 1922. We understand that production at the Guadalajara factory began in 1917. Thus, it seems likely that this vehicle was built in that or a later year.
