Lot details Registration No: BGC501G Chassis No: 818.360.014018 Mot Expiry: July 2010
Introduced at the March 1965 Geneva Salon, the Fulvia Coupe remained in production for over a decade. Derived from Antonio Fessia's well-regarded Fulvia Saloon, the newcomer was designed in-house by stylist Piero Castagnero and structural engineer Aldo Castagno. Sitting on a truncated 2330mm wheelbase and utilising the same independent double-wishbone front suspension, leaf-sprung / Panhard rod-located back axle and four-wheel disc brakes as its four-door sibling, the 2+2 seater boasted a 0.39 drag coefficient and 900kg kerb weight. Available in 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 litre guises, its commendably compact narrow angle V4 DOHC engine featured an alloy cylinder head / crankcase but cast-iron cylinder block. Wonderfully nimble and great fun, the Fulvia Coupe was among the best handling front-wheel drive cars of the 1960s / 1970s. Making little secret of its Motorsport ambitions, Lancia unveiled the Rallye 1.3 version in 1967. With a respectable 87bhp on tap it was capable of over 100mph. Arriving the following year, the Rallye 1.3 S gained an oil cooler, brake servo and 93bhp. Facelifted for the 1970 model year, all Fulvia Coupes sported lowered / widened radiator grilles, revised interiors and improved brakes.
Finished in maroon with black upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork) or "excellent" (engine, four-speed manual gearbox) condition. While, he comments that (a) the paintwork "shows slight perforations to the n/s arch tops", (b) "the interior light and clock do not work" and (c) "the front seats have been re-trimmed". Stated to have had six owners since being imported to the UK in 1979 (one of whom was a Polish aristocrat) `BGC 501G' benefits from "a factory oil cooler, O.E. subframe and brake servo". Said to be "a good reliable car", the Fulvia has reportedly been treated to the following during recent years: "new timing chain / cylinder head overhaul (2005), refurbished brake master cylinder (2006), brake callipers / electric washers (2007), electric fuel pump / nearside driveshaft (2008) and reconditioned brake servo / starter motor / radiator (2009)". Showing an unwarranted 95,000kms to its odometer, old MOT certificates on file indicate that the Lancia has covered just 9,000kms (circa 6,000miles) in the last twelve years.
