Announced at the October 1971 Motor Show but not entering full-scale production until the following year, the Dolomite revived a moniker that Triumph had not used since the 1930s. Aimed at the newly emerging market for well-appointed compact saloons with a sporting bent, its four-door monocoque bodyshell featured all-round coil-sprung suspension (independent front / `live' axle rear), rack and pinion steering and disc / drum brakes. Initially powered by an 1855cc SOHC four-cylinder engine allied to either four-speed manual or automatic transmission, later variants could be had with 1296cc, 1493cc or 1998cc units. Praised by the contemporary motoring press for its agile handling, peppy performance and inviting cabin, the Dolomite was a credible rival to the likes of the BMW 1602 / 2002 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Berlina. Introduced in 1979, the Dolomite SE was a `run out' model. Visually distinguished by a front spoiler, black paintwork, bold silver pinstripes / SE graphics and Spitfire-style road wheels, the newcomer married the bodyshell and running gear of the basic 1500 (single headlamp) to a more upmarket interior. Trimmed with light grey velour upholstery, the inviting cabin boasted matching carpets and a burr walnut dashboard / door cappings. Phased out of production alongside the rest of the range during August 1980, just 2,163 Dolomite SEs are thought to have been made.
The vendor describes this particular example as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. While, he further informs us that the Dolomite SE "needs to be judged on its appearance as unfortunately all the history has been mislaid. The saloon is believed to have been in the same ownership for sixteen years at some stage and shows an unwarranted 33,000 miles or so to its odometer. A full service will be carried out prior to the sale. It will be presented with a fresh MOT certificate and has just had a new windscreen fitted".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
