Velocette's sporting credentials were established in the pre war years with numerous race victories achieved utilising their single cylinder over head cam engine. Post war development resulted in Velocette winning both the 1949 and 1950 350cc World Championships utilising overhead cam singles, however, the focus of the company's road machinery production had now shifted to the over head valve models developed from the pre war MOV and which would culminate in the introduction of the Thruxton 500cc during the 1960's. For many enthusiast's though, a Velocette's valves should be operated by a camshaft mounted at the top of the engine and not buried somewhere within the crankcases, resulting in number of specials utilising cammy engines housed in the excellent post war pivoted fork frame being built. Indeed the overhead camshaft seemed to hold a particular allure for the gentlemen at Hall Green, rumours had circulated during the sixties of a new 250cc overhead cam engine being developed which unfortunately came to nothing, however, it does seem that at least one overhead cam machine was built at Hall Green during the sixties although it was in no way related to the stillborn 250cc. The machine in question is offered here.
Originally built by Simon Goodman in 1968 it originally started life as a 1961 Velocette Viper and was converted into a fast tourer by Mr Goodman. The cycle parts used include a large number of Thruxton components including the petrol and oil tanks, toolbox, alloy rimmed wheels and front hub. The frame houses an engine built utilising a KSS bottom end fitted with a factory cylinder and an ex Geoff Duke KTT cylinder head and a KTT camshaft. The gearbox is of the KSS type fitted with a Thruxton mainshaft, close ratio gears and clutch. Finished in black and gold this intriguing machine is described as being in good condition throughout.
