That today's Defender is immediately recognisable as a direct descendent of the Land Rover launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, is huge testimony to Maurice Wilks' original design. The 'Landie' was designed for light agricultural use and to create the cashflow required to kickstart Rover's post-war passenger car production. Inspired by the WW2 Jeep, its specification was influenced by the austere conditions of the time - it featured the extensive use of aluminium rather than steel and was finished in varying shades of military green. The irony of the Land Rover's longevity is that production was only intended to run for two to three years. Instead, it rapidly became the workhorse of the world.
This delightful right-hand drive SWB Series 1 model from 1956 apparently served as a garage-based recovery vehicle until 1963, when it was adopted for farm and private use. The vendor acquired 'XTD 941' in 2009, since when it has been restored to its current standard and retained for pleasure. The bodywork is finished in Green, which is complemented by a dark-coloured tilt and Blue/Black interior. The vendor describes the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, 2-litre petrol engine and four-speed manual gearbox as all being in "good" order and is offering the vehicle complete with a fresh MOT.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
