Lot details
Registration No: C273XLN
Chassis No: EA905128
Mot Expiry: June 2005

To boost the Quattro's rally competitiveness and nimbleness on the special stages even further, Audi needed to reduce the length of its winning Quattro 4-wheeldrive bodywork, which, though coupe-bodied, had originally been designed to accommodate up to five adults. The rally honed engineers reduced both wheelbase and overall length; the former by 320mm, mainly from the rear footwell, and the latter by only 240mm due to a longer nose having to house a substantial intercooler. As works drivers had complained about the amount of reflection from the original Coupe's sloping windscreen, a more vertical screen was borrowed from the Audi 80 as were the steel doors.

A minimum of 200 had to be produced for the model to qualify for FIA Group B, though, in fact, 214 were built between February 1984 and January 1986; 164 of them in roadgoing trim like the car being auctioned here today. The bodies were built for Audi by Baur in Stuttgart, having roof, wings and bumpers in kevlar, and bonnet and bootlid from glassfibre. All were lefthand drive..

The engine used, the first 5-cylinder Audi power unit to be equipped with four valves per cylinder, developed 300bhp at 6500rpm, an increase from the 200bhp of the previous longer wheelbase Coupe Quattro. Ventilated discs were fitted all round too.

This 1985-built Sport Quattro was acquired by the current owner with 86,460 kilometers indicated in December 1998, since when, having been mainly preserved in dry storage, the reading had only risen to the 87,772 kilometers displayed on the odometer when entered for this sale which the vendor believes to be the genuine total mileage for the coupe from new. C273 XLN also featured on a 1998 front cover of Audi Driver magazine with a driving impressions article inside.

The current condition of the sensational looking bodyshell is described as very good underneath with body panels painted in Tornado Red excellent as are the Recaro seats trimmed in black leather with Alcantara suede covered centre-sections. The turbocharged 5-cylinder motor of 2093cc capacity and 4-speed manual and 4-wheel drive transmission are reportedly in very good order as is the electrical equipment.

The Audi factory reckoned a standard Sport Quattro would be good for 0-62mph in 4.5sec with a 155mph top speed potential. Although the SORN declaration ends in July, the current MOT test pass certificate is valid until next June.. Do not miss a really practical to own supercar, which, thanks to the legendary Quattro 4-wheel drive technology, has genuinely sensational levels of roadholding.
