Lot details Registration No: SS 8820 Chassis No: DB6 2445/R Mot Expiry: Jan 2008
Introduced at the 1965 Motor Show, the Aston Martin DB6 was notable as the first model to be engineered following a factory move from Feltham to Newport Pagnell. Although, it shared the same visage as the outgoing DB5, the newcomer enjoyed notably better high-speed stability and interior space thanks to the provision of a Kamm tail and four-inch longer wheelbase respectively. Grafted over a sheet steel platform chassis, the four-seater's hand-finished aluminium panels helped contribute to a 1,466kg kerb weight. Praised by the contemporary press for its poise and handling, the DB6 employed all-round coil-sprung suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering. Powered by a reworked version of the fabulous Tadek Merak designed 3995cc DOHC straight-six engine, the desirable Vantage variant was quoted as developing 325bhp and 288lbft of torque. Fitted with a five-speed ZF manual gearbox as standard, it was reputedly capable of 148mph and 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds.
Finished in Dubonnet Rosso with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" (manual gearbox, interior trim, chassis, wheels / tyres) "very good" (engine, bodywork, paintwork) or "OK" (electrical equipment) condition. According to the accompanying V5C Registration Document, 'SS 8820' was first registered on March 8th 1966 and has had just three previous keepers (though, one of those was the seller's architectural practice). Treated to an engine and gearbox overhaul via Robin Hamilton and Chapman Spooner respectively not long before entering the current ownership in 1984, the Aston has since been looked after by respected marque specialist Four Ashes Garage. As well as a bodywork refurbishment and bare metal respray (1992), the current custodianship has also seen the Vantage benefit from an unleaded cylinder head conversion (2004), further repaint (2005) and brake system refurbishment (2006). Started readily upon inspection, the engine boasts triple Weber carburettors and electronic ignition. Pleasingly retaining its original black leather upholstery, wood-rimmed steering wheel and a period push-button radio, the car has made several trips to the Continent including one last year and the Aston Martin Owners' Club Grand European Tour of June 6th - 17th 1985 (which passed through Beauvais, Reims, Freiburg, Gstaad, Beaune, Tours plus Le Mans and is commemorated by a glovebox lid mounted plaque). A former concours entrant and regular at AMOC events, this smart DB6 Vantage is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate valid until January 2008 and historic class (free) road tax until February 2008.
