1958 Bentley S Series Continental Sports Saloon

Lot details
Registration No: 821 LUG
Chassis No: BC17 DJ
Mot Expiry: 05/09

Typifying the growing economic confidence of the mid 1950s, the Bentley S series was larger, faster and more boldly styled than its R-type predecessor. Introduced in 1955, it was underpinned by a new cruciform-braced box-section chassis equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a twin SU carburettor fed 4887cc OISE straight-six engine allied to standard-fit four-speed automatic transmission, the S series could waft along at over 100mph. Once affectionately described as "a veritable country club on wheels", the model was trimmed with the finest hides, carpets and wood veneers.

However, despite the excellence of the 'basic' car, there remained a core of Bentley enthusiasts who wanted something faster and less anonymous. Like the R-type Continental before it, the S series Continental chassis was available to coachbuilt special order only. With well honed improvements to its suspension, steering and braking, the newcomer represented the ultimate in contemporary long distance, high-speed touring. Weighing some 50kg less than the standard chassis and employing a taller back axle ratio, the Continental also played host to some of the period's finest coachwork. Reassuringly exclusive and expensive, just 431 are thought to have been supplied between 1955 and 1959.

Chassis no. BC17DJ is believed to be one of just fourteen right-hand drive four-door examples bodied by the respected coachbuilder James Young of Bromley. Registered in 1958, it is finished in Regal red with a champagne hide interior.

Owned during the 1970s by the bursar of Hurst Pierpoint College, West Sussex, the car was meticulously maintained whilst in his care, the substantial history file including numerous invoices from Caffyns. During the mid 1980s it passed to a Mr. King of Essex who was to oversee a thorough restoration between 1991 - 1997 by The Fullbridge Restoration Co. of Maldon, Essex. Invoices show attention to the body, interior, chromework and mechanics and a full photographic record is on file.

Mr King sold the car in 2005 and whilst in the present ownership, since 2006, it has continued to be well maintained and regularly serviced. Air conditioning has been installed, the wood veneer has been re-polished and 5 new tyres have recently been fitted.

Stated by its owner to drive beautifully, this delightful example is supplied with a Swansea V5C, MOT certificate expiring May 2009, the aforementioned history file and expired certificates dating back to 1973.e
