Following the injection of capital which followed the take over of Maserati by Citroen in 1968, the company quickly embarked on a renewal of their stunning but somewhat aged model range. One of the first fruits of this was what has become one of the most famous and revered Maserati models ever - the 1971 Bora. The Bora nominally replaced the Mistral and was the first Maserati to use a mid-engined design for the ultimate in handling and roadholding. It was squarely aimed at the very top echelons of the supercar market, dominated at that time by the Lamborghini Miura, with a stunning bodyshell designed by Ital Design and a 4719cc 310 BHP V8 carburettor engine driving through a 5-speed ZF gearbox. The influence of new owners Citroen was also apparent in the use of high pressure hydraulics for the brakes. The motoring press of the day were quick to praise the Bora's stunning performance and roadability as it heralded a new, more user-friendly generation of mid-engined cars; a fact that anybody who has driven a Miura on the limit would testify to! A cheaper, smaller engined version called the Merak was launched in 1972 and the Bora was produced until 1978, having received a larger 4.9 litre engine in 1976. The left hand drive example offered for sale today is currently unregistered but believed to have been manufactured in 1974, a fact supported by a letter in the history file from the Society of Automotive Historians. It was imported into the UK in 2000 from the US and comes complete with C&E 386 form showing tax paid status in the UK. Only 29185 miles are showing on the odometer although this is not verified. In an attractive combination of black exterior with red leather interior this car is being offered for sale as a restoration project not having been run since arriving in the UK and said to need 'substantial work for MOT standard'. Described by the vendor as having a good chassis and wheels/tyres, the engine, transmission, and bodywork are said to be fair with electrics and interior requiring attention. Being offered today entirely at no reserve this could with some work be a very cheap way to own one of the greatest supercars of the 1970s.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
