For many the last word in 1960s automotive chic, the Coupe and Cabriolet versions of Mercedes-Benz's W110/111 series 'Fintail' range entered the design stage in 1957 (three years before the already signed-off mainstay saloon versions were launched). Styled by Paul Bracq, particular emphasis was put on interior space (a known weakness on the outgoing 'Pontoon' equivalents). Thus, these flagship models sat on the same basic platform as their four-door brethren albeit with heavily revised sheetmetal. Master classes in understated elegance and simplicity of line, the Coupe and Cabriolet were subtly differentiated from one another (the Cabriolet's grille having a different rake for example). Introduced in late 1967, the 280SE Coupe was the ultimate six-cylinder 'Fintail'. Borrowing heavily from it saloon counterpart, it came equipped with all round independent suspension (coil and wishbone front, swing axle rear), disc brakes, recirculating-ball steering and four-speed automatic transmission as standard. Powered by a 2778cc, ohc, fuel injected straight-six developing some 160bhp and 166lbft of torque it was reputedly capable of over 115mph.
Finished in dark blue with light grey upholstery and black carpets, this particular left-hand drive example has been part of the collection since 1990. Showing an unwarranted 84,377 kilometres on its odometer, it benefits from a wood veneer dashboard and Becker Mexico radio. Apparently last treated to an anti-freeze change in 1993, it is thought to be one of just 613 280SE Coupes manufactured during 1970.
