When Mercedes-Benz bring out a new SL roadster, with soft and/or hardtop option, you can be sure that the model range is going to be around for a very long time. Not only will the SL remain virtually unchanged in Mercedes dealers showrooms for several years, but also examples will seen being driven and enjoyed out and about on the roads of the world for many decades after that. For the SL has most probably become the most enduring of all collector vehicles. In any case, Merc build quality, particularly a decade or more ago, was second to one.
When launched in 1971, the larger, heavier, more distinguished looking 280SL was nonetheless a far more effective high speed motorway express. Additional 350 and 450SLs, powered by S Class motors, were added to the catalogue and, in this shape, the SL continued well into the 1980s, albeit with different options.
Offered here is a 280SL which left the Stuttgart works in 1985 and provides the flexibility of coming complete with both hood and hardtop. On file are factory supplied handbooks and ten old MOTs, the latest test certificate pass being current until next January. The entrant describes the condition of SL bodywork, blue paintwork, grey interior, 2.8-litre 6-cylinder motor and automatic transmission as being very good. The 80,300 mileage displayed when entered for this sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total from new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
