Shorn of its W111/W112 predecessor's distinctive tail fins but boasting an increased glass area and lower roofline, the Mercedes-Benz W108/W109 saloon range debuted at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show. Built around an impressively strong monocoque chassis, the new four-door models featured independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a reinforced rear axle (complete with hydro-pneumatic compensating spring), larger 14-inch wheels and servo-assisted disc brakes. Initially available with a choice of either 2496cc or 2996cc overhead camshaft units a third 2778cc straight-six joined the engine line-up in 1967. An all new design, known as the M130, this latter powerplant benefited from improved cooling (courtesy of a revised cylinder layout / oil cooler) and could be had in dual carburettor or fuel-injected guises.
Finished in green with brown leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in excellent overall condition with regard to its engine, four-speed automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. With its present keeper for the last three years prior to which it was apparently "continuously owned and cherished by one South African family", it has been in the UK for less than a year. Reportedly "regularly serviced including renewal of timing chain less than 1,000 miles ago", it is believed but not warranted to have covered just 94,482km (approximately 59,000 miles) from new. Dating from the last year of production, it is said to retain the "original Becker radio and Mercedes leather".
Please note: This vehicle was incorrectly described as an 'SE' which of course denotes the fuel injection version. This is the reputedly more frugal but definitely the less expensive to work on when they go wrong, carburettor example. The vendor has also informed us that the car comes with an MOT until May 2006 and road fund licence September.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
