Herbert Austin formed his motor vehicle manufacturing company in the Midlands in 1906. During the first World War, Austin expanded and prospered in the armourments industry - though, in peacetime, his reliance on the Austin 20 was to prove to be a mistake and, by 1921, the company was in receivership. Needing to appeal to a wider market, Austin restructured and developed the Stanley Edge designed £165 1922 Austin 7 which became a solid seller.
This A40 was purchased new in 1962 by an Austin Motor Company employee at the Longbridge works, the vendor acquiring the righthand drive saloon directly from that first owner's widow in 1982 when the mileage was only 47,000. Since then, and through preservation in storage, the total displayed has only risen to 47,425 miles.
The current condition of the Italian Farina-styled bodyshell is described as being very good with white and green paintwork and red and grey interior both very good. Both 948cc BMC A Type four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox are reportedly also in very good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
