Scaled down and emasculated during the early 1970s in response to the fuel crisis, the Mustang reverted to its muscle car roots as the following decade progressed. Thus, the third generation of Ford's iconic model was powered by the 302 cu in (5-litre) V8 of the good old days which by the late 1980s was putting out a healthy 225bhp. The style changed too, and from 1983 the Mustang was again available as a convertible, making this a version that could wear the galloping wild horse badge with pride. The convertible GT was the rarest and most expensive variant, listed at $16,610 new for 1988.
Finished in silver over blue with light blue leather upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example was supplied new to Jersey, an island peculiarly full of desirable performance cars even though it operates a blanket speed limit of 40mph. With only two previous owners, the Ford's unwarranted odometer reading of only 34,000 miles might possibly be correct. The vendor describes the bodywork as "sound and generally free of dents" and the paintwork as "OK but needs TLC in places", while he further comments that the engine "runs very well" and the desirable five-speed manual transmission is "quite in the gears". As well as a power hood, alloy wheels and electric windows / mirrors, the Mustang boasts air conditioning and cruise control, while on the demerit side are non-functioning fuel and temperature gauges plus a rear seat that could apparently do with re-covering. A rare sight on UK roads, this third generation Mustang offers high-performance, open-topped thrills for four on a comparatively shoestring budget. Taxed and tested, it is accompanied by "original owners and operating literature".
