Lot details Registration No: EGC123H Chassis No: IR1209 Mot Expiry: Mar 2007
Famously launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type created a furore. Its combination of supercar performance, superb styling and low price tag was unrivalled. Early sportscar racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori amongst others helped cement its reputation. Built as a monocoque with a front sub-frame to cradle the engine, its combination of all round independent suspension and disc brakes allied to rack and pinion steering gave it excellent roadholding and handling capabilities. The indomitable XK twin cam supplied abundant power. If the design had an Achilles' heel then it was the recalcitrant Moss gearbox. However, Jaguar was quick to correct this shortcoming with a four-speeder of its own design just part of a continual programme of E-Type development that saw the model metamorphose through three Series. Introduced in 1968, the Series II cars were distinguishable by their revised bumper and light arrangements. Less noticeable was the increased size of the front air intake that in conjunction with dual cooling fans made the Series II better behaved in hot weather and heavy traffic. With its 4235cc engine developing a quoted 265bhp and 283lbft of torque, it was reputedly capable of nearly 150mph and 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds.
Finished in silver with blue leather / vinyl upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good / fair" (interior trim, bodywork, wheels / tyres) or "good" (engine, manual gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, paintwork) condition. Purchased from the E-Type Centre in April 1993, EGC123H has been in the current ownership ever since. Reportedly the subject of extensive work during the late 1980s (as documented by an accompanying history file), the past thirteen years have seen the Jaguar benefit from an unleaded cylinder head conversion courtesy of the Cylinder Head Shop, Wimbledon (late '90s), fresh radiator (late 90's), reconditioned alternator, stainless steel exhausts (early '90s), replacement clutch ('93), new water pump (2004) and a carburettor rebuild (2004). Apparently treated to a body overhaul by GL Coachworks in the late 1990s, it has also received various new panels namely doors (Southern Classics late, '90s), floors (early 2000s) and a bonnet (GL coachworks, 2000). Enhanced by the renewal of its "seat trim and various panels / carpets (mid '90s)", the interior also boasts a Clifford car alarm and Sony stereo complete with 10-CD autochanger. Believed but not warranted to have covered 49,613 miles from new, EGC123H comes with history file, MOT certificate valid until March 2007 and two Cheney E-type suitcases.
