Lot details Registration No: TBF 729 Chassis No: C102746 GHD2 Mot Expiry: July 2007
Introduced in Autumn 1955, the MGA married a proven chassis design derived from its TD/TF predecessors (independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a 'live' rear axle) to the new B-series four-cylinder, pushrod-ohv engine first seen in the Magnette saloon. Borrowing cues from the Abingdon factory's successful EX182 prototype racers (fifth and sixth in class at that year's Le Mans) its wonderfully elegant styling ensured strong sales on both sides of the Atlantic. Continually updated, the MGA range was joined by Coupe and 'Twin Cam' variants in 1956 and 1958 respectively. Prompted by the latter's performance advantage, the standard pushrod model received a capacity increase to 1588cc and front disc brakes in May 1959. Equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering as standard, the resultant '1600' MKI was reputedly capable of 100mph plus. Visually distinguished by its recessed radiator grille slats and horizontal tail-lamps, the '1600' MKII arrived in March 1961. Faster and more refined than its predecessor thanks to a larger capacity powerplant and higher gearing, it was nevertheless supplanted by the MGB just over a year later.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery (piped in red), this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly upgraded with a later MGB B-series 1800cc engine since being acquired by its last registered keeper in 1984, 'TBF 729' is said to "drive superbly". Riding on wire wheels and sporting a boot rack, the coupe is further praised by the seller as "a nice usable MGA" that has "great performance". A year round proposition, this well presented MGA coupe is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until January 2008.
