Norton had introduced the Manx during 1946 as an over the counter racer with telescopic front forks and a plunger frame, known as the "Garden Gate". Following the success of the "featherbed" framed machines during the 1950 season a considerably revised production Manx was introduced for 1951 utilising the Rex McCandless designed frame. No major changes occurred for the next two years until the introduction of the "short stroke" engines, which in the case of the 30M had a bore and stroke of 86 x 85.62mm instead of the earlier models 79.62 x 100mm. The subsequent season's models were unchanged but the 1956 models adopted some improvements first seen on the 1955 works bikes including a hollow exhaust valve and flanged double row ball race main bearings on the timing side.
This example was rebuilt during 1978 by Ray petty at which time it was fitted with one of his 5 speed PGT gearboxes and enclosed coil valve springs. It has been in the present owner's possession since 1989 during which time it has been paraded regularly and won numerous Norton Owners Club concours awards. The petrol tank is autographed by Geoff Duke and the road registered machine has appeared on the front cover of "Car and Bike Classic" magazine.
Described as being in good condition in all respects it is offered with a number of parts including a magnesium alloy four leading shoe front brake assembly laced on to a 19 inch Dunlop 2.25 inch rim, a complete set of forks, a spare open megaphone and 2 spare silencers, a spare 46 tooth rear wheel sprocket and engine sprocket, a foot rest and rear wheel stand together with two side stands. Correspondence and invoices form Ray Petty regarding the rebuild also accompany it as does a number of concours trophies, a copy of Classic Car and Bike magazine and a tailor made dust cover.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
