Lot details Registration No: CAS 579 Chassis No: TC7213 Mot Expiry: May 2012
Developed from the original TA Series Midget, which was introduced in 1936, the TC made its debut immediately after the end of the Second World War, and soon became MG's best selling sports car. Before it was replaced by the very different TD of 1950, exactly 10,000 cars were produced. The TA had a simple ladder-type chassis, a two-seater style based on a wooden-framed passenger cabin, with long sweeping wings, stiff leaf spring suspension at front and rear, but an old-type four-cylinder engine. The TB of 1939, which replaced it, used the modern 54bhp, 1250cc engine instead, and the post-war TC was a lightly-modified version of that car with the same engine, transmission and running gear, but with a slightly widened cabin, and minor changes to the rear suspension. Independent tests confirmed a top speed of 75mph, and an easy cruising speed of more than 60mph. All classic MG sports cars of this type have a very firm ride, and the long-established reputation of the TC tells us that a well-maintained engine can last almost indefinitely. All TCs had centre-lock wire spoke wheels, and a big, exposed, slab fuel tank, with a fold-back soft top and removable canvas side screens for weather protection.
Built at Abingdon, south of Oxford, in 1948, this particular example was supplied new to South Africa. Repatriated to the UK over forty years later, it has been in the current ownership since 1991. Finished in Red with Beige upholstery, the two-seater is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition. Apparently showing some "crazing and cracking" to its otherwise "good and bright paint finish", the MG is further understood to possess "a good engine with decent oil pressure" and a four-speed manual transmission that is "good in all gears". Said to have been sparingly used of late, this appealing TC is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
