BMW's 'M' cars are now part of automotive folklore. The first model to wear the iconic badge was the M5 of 1984. Based on the 535i chassis of the time (E28), it was handbuilt by the company's motorsport technicians and powered by an evolution of its M1 engine. Superseding it five years later, the second generation model followed the same pattern, and was evolved from the E34 535i. It was initially powered by a suitably tuned straight-six unit of 3.6-litres, which boasted an output of 311bhp. However, late in 1991 the displacement was increased to 3.8-litres, raising peak power to 335bhp and allowing the 0-60mph sprint to be dispensed with in just 5.9 seconds.
This 1992 model benefits from the bigger engine and is finished in Silver complemented by Black leather upholstery. The vendor views the M5 as having "very good" bodywork, paintwork and interior trim and "excellent" six-cylinder engine and five-speed manual gearbox. Recent maintenance has apparently included the fitting of new front and rear brake discs and pads, and a radiator. It is being sold complete with a big file of old invoices and MOT certificates, plus one valid into February of next year. Beautifully made and quick even by today's standards, these M cars are stunning value in the current market.
