Lot details Registration No: H511PVW Chassis No: WVWZZZ157MK006297 Mot Expiry: October 2006
Launched some thirty-one years ago, the MKI Golf was an instant hit. Crisp, classless and chic, its appeal proved universal. Penned by Giorgetto Guigiaro along his "total industrial design" principles, it allowed Volkswagen to finally pension off the outmoded Beetle. Like its GTI sibling a few seasons before, the Karmann-styled Cabriolet version became a must-have model. Debuting at the 1979 Geneva Salon, it was such a neat, well-resolved package that VW continued its production it into the 1990s by-passing the MK2 entirely.
Supplied via St Brelade's Garage, Jersey, this particular example is reported to have been in single lady ownership from new until its importation to the UK earlier this year. Finished in desirable Pearlescent Inca Blue with grey cloth interior, it is described by the vendor as being in "exceptional order throughout". Thought to have "covered just 60,605 recorded miles", a figure that "the service history - largely carried out by Alan Rault in St Helier - helps support", it is fitted with Volkswagen's renowned 1.8 carburettor engine. Further benefiting from optional automatic transmission and a power hood, it is said to be "a very enjoyable yet stress-free drive on our increasingly busy roads".
Able to boast their own register in this country thanks to the MKI Golf Club (itself a sign of the car's emerging classic status), MKI Golf Cabriolets have been collectable for some time. While, H511 PVW may not be as fast as its GTI brethren, it does have the advantage of being both cheaper to maintain and insure. Though, whether it is mothballed for posterity or enjoyed in all-weathers (a boon courtesy of the snugger than average soft-top) is for a potential purchaser to decide.
Recently serviced, this unusually clean Cabriolet is offered for sale with history file (original delivery note, instruction manual, service schedule, VW folder etc), copied Jersey logbook, V5C registration document and MOT certificate valid until October 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
