Introduced in 1956, the Studebaker Hawk was conceptualised as a family-orientated alternative to the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Thunderbird. Marketed as a sporting four- / five-seater, it benefited from the same 'American car with the European look' styling that had won the Indiana manufacturer an Academy Gold Medal from the New York School of Fashion some three years earlier. Indeed, details such as its bold grille, bonnet scoop and engine-turned dashboard panel were attributed to RLA (Raymond Loewy Associates) Design Chief Robert Bourke. Based around a platform chassis equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, the initial choice of 'Flight' (186ci, 101hp in-line 6), 'Power' (259ci, 170hp V8), 'Sky' (289ci, 210hp V8) or 'Golden' (352ci, 275hp V8) Hawks was whittled down until by 1960 a single 289ci 'Hawk' model remained. Undoubted flagship of the Studebaker range, a punchy $2,650 basic price tag saw it account for just 3,929 domestic sales during 1961 (though, its ability to draw showroom traffic was undiminished).
Finished in light green with white side strake detailing and ribbed light green vinyl upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (interior trim, chassis, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (289ci / 4.7 litre V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission, electrical equipment, bodywork) condition. Said to have been on museum display since its importation from America in 1992, the smart two-door coupe has yet to be UK registered. Though, we understand that the relevant customs duties have been paid. Believed to have covered just 69,870 miles from new, this pampered Studebaker Hawk further benefits from a full-length dust cover, front wing protectors (for engine bay maintenance work) and an owner's manual.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has a flat battery and the brakes are binding.
