The one-off Moorland that Ian Raby drove to victory in the first UK Formula Junior race can be considered the prototype of the Gemini marque. It was designed by Leslie Richmond and built by Graham Warner's Chequered Flag Garage in Chiswick. When Richmond became a Chequered Flag employee, Warner backed the project, renaming it Gemini - after his birth sign. The newcomer debuted at the 1959 Brands Hatch Boxing day meeting, in the hands of a then relatively unknown driver called Jim Clark! Some 30 Gemini Formula Juniors are thought to have been produced altogether, around 26 of which were fitted with BMC engines and 4 with Ford units.
The 1959 front-engined Gemini MKII being sold is well known to the Formula Junior Historic Racing Association and is a front-running competitively prepared car, as raced by Tony Goodwin and Ian Bankhurst with considerable success at a range of European circuits including: Nürburgring, Spa, Porto, Oporto, Angouleme, Donington Park, Mallory Park, Cadwell Park and Silverstone. The Gemini is reportedly powered by 1071cc Swiftune BMC unit that's mated to a Jack Knight dog gearbox, and drives through a strengthened transmission and differential. Apparently the chassis was crack tested and repaired in 2009 and the car contains many recently replaced parts, including: front and rear suspension uprights, wheel flanges, steering arms, stub axles, wishbones, drive shafts, brake shoes, radiator, hydraulics, electrics and instruments.
A range of spares is available by separate negotiation including: an original 1098cc long-stroke engine for Monaco (0 hours - overhauled by Nick Swift); Jack Knight gearbox; castings for differential casing, dropbox and backplates. There are also patterns for the differential casing, dropbox, rear uprights and brake drums. The car comes complete with 'Goodwood' silencer, original seat, HVIF and HTP papers and the offer of set-up information and assistance to the next keeper.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
