Marque founder John Marston produced his first Sunbeam motor car, a De Dion powered voiturette, in 1901 and formed the Sunbeam Motor Company to make others in 1905. Louis Coatalen joined the Midland firm as Chief Engineer shortly afterwards and Sunbeam quickly became a force to be reckoned with in motor sport, with even more Grand Prix success and record breaking during the 1920s. Meanwhile, the first British-made Talbot had been produced in North Kensington in 1906. However, the assets of both Sunbeam and British Talbot were acquired by Rootes, who combined the marques for a new range in 1938.
Post-WW2, Sunbeam-Talbot production switched from Talbot's London works to Rootes at Ryton, where Hillmans and Humbers were also built. In 1948, both models were replaced by the 80 and 90 with restyled bodies and more powerful overhead valve engines; these models proving to be extremely popular with rally driving owners.
Offered here is a Midlands-made Sunbeam-Talbot 90, a 1951-built righthand drive car providing convertible accommodation for four, presented in sage green with red leather interior renewed only a few years ago described as fair and hood said to be excellent.
Both 2267cc four-cylinder motor and four-speed gearbox with column-change are reportedly good, whilst electrical equipment is said to be in fair condition. On file are thirteen former MOTs, the current certificate for this rare and characterful open Sunbeam being valid until next May.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
