Lot details Registration No: GXA 534 Chassis No: ARA47384 Mot Expiry: April 2008
Following in the tyre tracks of the renowned Austin 7, the Austin 8 was launched during February 1939. Based around a box-section reinforced pressed-steel platform (as opposed to a more conventional ladder-frame type chassis), the newcomer was equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, hydraulic shock absorbers and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a 900cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 61mph. Initially available in saloon or tourer guises and with a choice of two- or four-doors, the only derivative to be reintroduced after World War Two was the four-door saloon.
Finished in black with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment), "excellent" (chassis, bodywork, paintwork) or "as new" (interior trim, khaki-painted engine) condition. Purchased by former Suzuki boss Rex White in 1987, 'GXA 534' is believed but not warranted to have been "an ex-ministry car". Entering the current ownership via Mr White's widow, the two-door saloon is understood to have been recently recommissioned following a prolonged period of dry storage. Reportedly treated to "a new battery, brake overhaul and fresh tyres", the 8 is only now being offered for sale due to a change of circumstances. Showing an unwarranted 62,000 miles to its odometer, this charming 1940s Austin is accompanied by a MOT certificate and historic class (free) road tax both valid until April 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
