Renowned Italian designer Nuccio Bertone had been commissioned during 1967 by Innocenti to design a new scooter aimed at the youth market and intended to replace the J range machines. The result was the "Luna" line of 50cc and 75cc machines introduced in early 1968. With this project completed, Bertone was then asked to design the replacements for the Li and SX machines. The new models, typed the DL in most markets and GP in the UK featured lower and sleeker styling than their predecessors. The headset was new, employing a more powerful, rectangular headlight and the headstock was shorter resulting in an apparently lower machine, whilst a restyled front mudguard, slimmer legshields and narrower handlebars contributed to the sleeker appearance. The new models featured fewer chromed and polished components reflecting trends in the contemporary automotive world.
Offered in 125, 150 and 200cc capacities, the new models proved to be the best performing Lambrettas, with, in the case of the 200cc example as offered a claimed top speed of 70 mph.
The new machines became available at the start of 1969 and continued being produced in Italy until April 1971 when Innocenti, by now owned by British Leyland, ceased making scooters so as to concentrate on the manufacture of the Innocenti Mini. Fortunately production continued in Spain (where Servetta had been building the machines under licence) and India.
The beautifully restored machine offered dates from 1981 and has formed part of a private collection. The metallic blue paintwork is described as being in excellent condition and the scooter is further understood to be in good condition mechanically, having covered only 80 miles since the completion of the restoration. It is offered with a Swansea V5C.
