Lot details Registration No: ABW286L Chassis No: 72030666L Mot Expiry: Nov 2008
"The uncanny cornering powers of this remarkable machine equal and probably exceed those of any production car we have driven before: similarly the handling and brakes are certainly not bettered" (Motor magazine, September 1967).
Introduced during June 1967, the Elan +2 was - in Lotus's own words - "designed to carry two adults and two children on a long holiday in comfort". Based on a suitably lengthened / widened version of its smaller sibling's backbone chassis, the newcomer enjoyed both better aerodynamics and superior grip (thanks to a 0.30 drag co-efficient and six-inch wider track / fatter tyres respectively). Available from February 1971, the +2S 130 variant brought a welcome boost in performance. Powered by a 'Big Valve' version of the Lotus 'twin-cam' engine mated to four-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 121mph and 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds.
Finished in blue over silver with black upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "6/10" (interior trim), "7/10" (electrical equipment", "9/10" (engine, gearbox, chassis) or "10/10" (bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly "a genuine three owner car" that was with its "previous keeper for twenty-three years", 'ABW 286L' is further understood to have covered less than 54,000 miles from new. Dry stored for eleven years, the Lotus is said to have undergone a recent recommissioning during which attention was paid to its "brakes, suspension bushes, tyres and paintwork etc". Riding on alloy wheels but accompanied by a spare set of steel ones, this "most attractive" Elan +2S 130 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
