The value of the motorcycle as a means of communication was quickly recognised by the military during the First World War. The British forces adopted a number of machines, however the majority of solos supplied were either Douglas, or, as offered here Triumph Model H's, with approximately 30,000 of the model being produced before hostilities ceased.
At the dawn of the 20th century Triumph of Coventry were well established as a manufacturer of bicycles and in common with many of their rivals saw motorcycle production as a natural evolution. Early machines utilized Minerva engines; however, by 1906 the company was producing its own 3 hp single cylinder engine. This machine led to a 3 1/2 hp version in 1907 that benefited from the experience gained with the earlier design and made use of carefully researched metals that greatly enhanced reliability. As the century entered its second decade it was becoming apparent that the motorcycle was being held back by the need for an effective gear system, M.J Schulte then designed a multiple disc clutch which was applied to a 3 ¼ hp model shortly before World War One, which he subsequently combined with a three speed countershaft gearbox manufactured by Sturmey Archer to produce the Model H. As with all Triumph products the new system had undergone extensive testing before entering production, a fact reflected in the reliability that the Model H demonstrated in the harshest operating conditions earning itself the nickname "trusty Triumph" from the DR's who relied upon it.
This example is offered with an old style V5 and a buff logbook, for anyone seeking a first vintage motorcycle the "trusty Triumph" is ideal. The countershaft gearbox, well proven engine design and belt drive promise a degree of reliability and usability and a wealth of knowledge exists for the model.
