The arrival of the World Superbike Championship in 1988 resulted in number of new "race replicas" being released by the major manufacturers in order to gain homolgation for the new series. The formula specified a 1000cc twin or 750cc four cylinder engine which did much to revive the 750cc class. Kawasaki announced their entry during the year in the form of the ZX750H, inspired by the ZXR-7 factory endurance machines and using an engine based on the well proven GPX750R power unit. An alloy beam frame with monoshock suspension, triple disc brakes and racing bodywork were all featured and the model continued until 1991 when the ZX750J and the ZXR750R were introduced. The former was a race replica continuing in the manner established by the ZX750H, however, the ZXR750R was an homolagation special intended for use on the track, but equipped with all the legal road requirements in order to comply with the prevailing Superbike regulations. The new model used a new four cylinder engine with a 71 x 47.3 mm bore and stroke and was equipped with a six speed gearbox. 1993 saw the introduction of the ZX750M, now equipped with "ram air" induction and was offered until 1996 when it was superseded by the ZX-7RR which had new engine dimensions of 73 x 44.7mm., a close ratio gearbox and stiffer frame when compared to the standard model.
The example offered was campaigned with considerable success in the 1999 and 2000 German Superbike Championship by the Shell Team Motorsport Scheibe with German champion Jochen Schmid in the saddle. Running a 12.5:1 compression ratio it delivered 160PS at 14,500 rpm on the dyno. A letter from the team that accompanies the motorcycle gives its full technical specification (in German) and a dyno chart is also included.
