Lot details Registration No: CLG 81F Chassis No: KC8688 Mot Expiry: Sept 2010
Introduced in July 1966, the Triumph GT6 was modelled after an earlier design by Giovanni Michelotti. Intended to be a faster and more practical proposition than its Spitfire roadster sibling, the newcomer was based around a box-section chassis frame equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil-and-wishbone front / swing-axle rear), rack and pinion steering and disc / drum brakes. Powered by a 1998cc straight-six OHV engine allied to four-speed synchromesh manual transmission, the beautifully proportioned GT was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 11.1 seconds and 108mph. Dubbed the `poor man's E-type', the model drew both plaudits and criticism from the contemporary motoring press. While, most publications praised the fastback coupe's looks, performance and refinement, others discovered that its tail was prone to lurid oversteer should a hard cornering driver suddenly come off the throttle. A nominal 2+2 seater, the Triumph featured an opening rear tailgate and nicely appointed interior complete with heater and well-stocked wooden dashboard. A popular option, overdrive brought more relaxed high-speed cruising and improved fuel economy. Arguably more akin to a Jaguar than an MG, the MKI version of the GT6 remained in production until September 1968 by which time some 15,818 had been sold. Though, today survivors are a comparatively rare sight.
Finished in Wedgwood Blue with blue upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "better than new" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork and paintwork. While, he further informs us that the car's original seat covers are complimented by new carpets. Said to have been "beautifully restored by a Club member", `CLG 81F' boasts a stainless steel exhaust and MOT certificate valid until September 2010. Offered for sale at a fraction of what it would cost to have professionally renovated, this gorgeous Triumph GT6 has to be worthy of close inspection.
