Moto Guzzi introduced their first production motorcycle in 1921 which quickly proved itself to be a durable, high quality product. Named the Normale the new model introduced features that were to become synonymous with factory's products for the next 50 years. The engine was built in unit with the three speed gearbox and featured a geared primary drive, a horizontal cylinder an outside flywheel and chain drive.
For 1923 a new model was introduced with a revised frame which both extended the wheelbase and reduced the machines overall weight. Known as the Sport, it retained the well proven 500cc single cylinder engine of the Normale with production totalling a little over 4000 units before it was replaced in the late twenties. An interesting option was the availability of a Bosch electric lighting system powered by a 30 watt dynamo for an additional 1,000 lire over the machines purchase cost of 8,750 lire.
This beautifully restored example has formed part of a private collection during which it has not been used. Although not currently registered in this country it is offered with a Belgian registration document. The Guzzi factory has indicated that the engine, although a Sport unit, dates from three years later than the frame number.
