Launched in 1971, the W107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque was equipped with all round independent suspension, power assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the 500SL, flagship of the UK range, was unveiled in May 1980. Powered by a 4973cc (240bhp, 299lbft of torque) V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 140mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. In production for nine years, the model's fearsome price tag (it cost some £41,700 by 1989) ensured that only 11,817 were dispatched worldwide.
Finished in silver with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as having a good engine, electrics, transmission, interior, chassis and tyres together with excellent paint and bodywork. Said to have seen "low mileage, proper garaging, regular service and very careful ownership" over the last five years, there are apparently no notable changes to its original specification. Believed to have covered 91,600 miles from new, it rides on smart alloy wheels and is currently fed a diet of leaded petrol (though a future owner may wish to substitute this for unleaded with a suitably octane rich additive).
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
