NUT Motorcycles were founded in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1912 by Hugh Mason and Jock Hall. The two had been building motorcycles since 1906 under the HM badge based on Hugh Mason's initials and later under the Jesmond and Bercley. By 1913 their racing motorcycles were competing successfully in the Isle of Man with Hugh Mason taking victory in the 1913 Junior TT by just 46 seconds.
Originally the company had used proprietary engines supplied by Villiers and JAP, before manufacturing their own vee twin which rewarded them with further competition success. This prompted Mason and Hall to move the company to larger premises, unfortunately, which with the advent of the 1st World War proved to be a mistake with the company being declared bankrupt. In 1921 production recommenced following its purchase by Richard Ellis with the company now called Hugh Mason and Company but again failed in 1922 before returning to the market in 1923 as NUT with manufacture continuing until 1933.
Throughout the decade they produced machines of the highest quality endowed with exceptionally handsome looks which could stand comparison with the best in the market. The exceptionally high regard in which they were held continues today.
This extremely rare machine, first registered on the 6th May 1924, underwent a restoration in the late nineties and has recently had the nickel plating and brightwork refreshed and new handlebar grips fitted. Finished in the traditional brown livery associated with the marque it is fitted with an acetylene lighting set and described by the vendor as being in excellent order throughout. It is offered with an original buff log book and a current Swansea V5C with all numbers corresponding to the literature and paperwork. It offers a rare opportunity for a collector to acquire one of the most prestigious machines from the "Golden Age" of motorcycling.
