Mot Expiry: Nov 2007

Joining Triumph in 1933, a scant two years after his famous Monte Carlo Rally victory aboard an Invicta S-type, Donald Healey was rapidly promoted to the post of technical director. Driving force behind the fabulous supercharged (baby Alfa 8C-esque) Dolomite Straight Eight, he took its commercial failure rather personally. Determined to revive the marque's finances, he set about revamping its medium-sized model range. Introduced in 1936, the new Vitesse was available in both four- and six-cylinder guises. Displacing 1776cc and 1991cc respectively, the two freshly developed overhead-valve units were noted for their willing nature and generous torque. With 65bhp at its disposal, the more compact four-cylinder car was reputedly capable of over 73mph. Boasting a 9ft 2in wheelbase and 4ft 4.5in track, it was built around a suitably braced ladder chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf sprung suspension and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. An understated yet elegant design, the Vitesse 14/60 Six-Light Saloon competed against rivals from the likes of SS, MG and Riley.

Finished in blue with grey leather upholstery, this particular example has been in the current ownership for "approximately eighteen years". Thought to be one of just three Vitesse 14/60 Six-Light Saloons known to the pre-1940 Triumph Owners' Club, 'DT 8196' was reportedly treated to an extensive six-year restoration during the 1990s. As well as having its chassis shot-blasted, the saloon is said to have benefited from a replacement leather interior and overhauled engine etc. While last year saw it fitted with a new water pump. Stylish yet practical, this very rare Triumph Sports Saloon is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 29th 2007.
