Lot details Registration No: DHD426S Chassis No: LD45264A Mot Expiry: Feb 2011
Introduced in June 1970, the Triumph Stag was conceived as a luxury convertible sportscar to rival the likes of the R107-series Mercedes-Benz SL. As such, it came equipped with electric windows, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and servo-backed disc / drum brakes as standard. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell (stylist Giovanni Michelotti had physically shortened a pre-production Triumph 2000 saloon in order to fashion the initial prototype), the newcomer featured all-round independent suspension (McPherson strut front / semi-trailing arm rear) and a well laid-out 2+2 cabin. Neatly integrated, the substantial roll-over hoop that joined the B-pillars gained extra strength from a T-bar link to the windscreen frame. With some 145bhp and 167lbft of torque on tap from its bespoke 2997cc SOHC V8 engine, the model was reputedly capable of 120mph. Available with a choice of four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission all but the earliest Stags benefited from both hard- and soft-top roofs. Despite being in production for seven years during which time 25,877 cars were made, a mere 9,500 or so are thought to have survived.
The automatic righthand drive car offered is a 1977 example, making it among the last off the line. It has Tahiti blue paintwork and beige trim. The car's six-owner history is fully documented and appears to support the recorded mileage of just under 95,000. The vehicle has apparently had a great deal of money invested in it over the years, not least in recent times for: an overhauled engine and bare metal respray (2004); complete rustproofing, refurbishment of the hard top and extensive electrical and cosmetic improvements including reconditioning the hood frame and fitting a new soft-top (2007). `DHD 426S' sports a range of carefully selected modifications, comprising: rear inertia seatbelts; Thatcham CAT.2 immobiliser; oil pressure gauge; Spax adjustable dampers; stainless steel exhaust and tubular exhaust manifolds (Phoenix); Lumenition electronic ignition; Supergill radiator; Kenlowe fan; removable rear side windows; LED rear stop/tail bulbs and hi-viz `blue' main beam headlight bulbs. The vendor describes the car as being in "very good/excellent" (bodywork, paintwork, interior trim) or "excellent" (engine, transmission, electrical equipment) condition and further informs us that it comes with a stock of spares (new rear bumper etc). Splendid looking cars, Stags are also a joy to drive. Good ones are now very sought after.
