The introduction of the new World Superbike Championship in 1988 and its attendant regulations which dictated that the motorcycles raced were available to the general public prompted Honda to develop a new production motorcycle from the existing RVF750 works endurance and Superbike racer.
The RC30, when it arrived, demonstrated to the world Honda's immense technical ability. Although road legal and technically a production motorcycle, this homologation special was in reality a pure racing motorcycle, which despite its competition focus proved to be one of the greatest road bikes as well as a dominant race bike. The liquid cooled 748cc vee four engine with twin overhead cams was housed in an aluminium frame with a single sided swinging arm and adjustable 43mm front forks which helped the machine deal with the 122bhp available in standard form. 4 piston callipers and fully floating front discs derived from the units fitted to the RVF were employed. As one would expect with a machine intended for the track, a great deal of emphasis was placed on keeping the weight to a minimum.
The addition of the HRC race kit, which included a full competition exhaust system, increased the power output to 135bhp.
This particular machine was purchased by Hartwells of Abingdon Ltd from the Honda Britain Race Shop. A letter supplied by them to the vendor dated the 13th September 1990 states that it was campaigned during the 1989 season by Brian Morrison as a full factory machine. Brian Morrison broke the lap record during practice for the 1989 Formula One TT in which he finished second. The letter also suggests that the machine was ridden to third place in the 1989 Macau Grand Prix by Steve Hislop.
