As the successor to the W116 range, the Bruno Sacco penned W126 Series was the second generation of flagship vehicles to bear the S-Class name. Power for the 380SEL version came from a 201bhp V8 engine linked to four-speed manual or automatic transmission. Making the most of its 0.34 drag coefficient, the luxury express could complete the 0-60mph dash in 9 seconds and accelerate on to a top speed of 127mph. While most of the hi-tech safety features embodied in the 380SEL are commonplace in lesser cars these days, they were significant innovations back in the early 1980s and included: traction control, seat belt pre-tensioners, anti-lock brakes and crumple zones.
The Petrol Blue right-hand drive 380SEL on offer was first registered to Mr D Stoner in January 1983. The indicated mileage of just 17,641 miles from new is confirmed by the car's extensive service record. Perhaps unsurprisingly the vendor currently regards the bodywork, engine and automatic transmission as "excellent" and the paintwork and Beige leather upholstery as "good to excellent". This timewarp Mercedes boasts an electric sunroof, heated rear windscreen, Becker radio, automatic transmission, heated front seats, central locking, electric windows and climate control plus an MOT valid into January 2013. An amazing amount of motorcar for the current money.
