Jaguar's Mark X saloon assumed top-of-the-range status at its introduction in 1961. Its wider track and lower roofline ensured an infinitely more modern look than achieved by the outgoing MKIX, while the four headlamps and squat, vaned radiator grille heralded a new image for the marque. It was the first Jaguar Saloon to feature independent rear suspension, while the front featured the proven set-up of double wishbones and coil springs. At launch it was powered by a 3.8-litre version of the company's ubiquitous straight-six, DOHC XK engine. However, upgrades for 1964 included: an increase in capacity of the standard engine to 4.2-litres and a new all-synchromesh, four-speed manual gearbox. Braking was by discs all-round and power-assisted steering was standard. By the time of the 1966 London Motor Show, the range had been renamed 420G, some 5,763 of which were built before the model was superseded by the XJ6.
The 420G being sold is a right-hand drive example that sports Gold paintwork and is equipped with the optional automatic transmission. The vendor informs us that the bodywork is "very good and solid", the paintwork shows "some discolouration", the interior trim is "OK", the engine "sound" and the transmission "good". The Jaguar currently displays an unwarranted 72,000 miles and is MOT'd into October.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
