This Austin-Healey 100/4 was made in 1955. The right-hand drive two-door sports, a later model with the four-speed manual gearbox with benefit of overdrive, was acquired by the vendor from the Autosport Show at the NEC in January 2004. A previous engineer owner, however, had looked after the car for thirty-five years before that, completely rebuilding it, replacing or rebuilding all components as necessary and stripping the paint back to bare metal and repainting it in the currently excellent red with white coves.
The 2660cc four-cylinder engine, fed by twin SU carbs, was fully rebuilt, too, given a rebore, fitted with high compression pistons, all new bearings, a new ported cylinder head with new valves, a high-lift camshaft and electronic ignition. Indeed, the engine can still be regarded as being 'fresh', claims the owner, as it had only done 1144 miles when entered for the sale.
Other upgrades include a louvred bonnet with leather strap, a stainless steel exhaust system, uprated rear springs and Minilite alloys. The interior trim has been renewed in black hide, while weather equipment consists of tonneau cover and removable side-screens. In best 100/4 tradition, the windscreen drops down if required for maximum fresh air!
RJJ 914 has only recently been treated to a full service by a marque specialist at a reported cost of £1000. Whilst the history file is described by the owner as being comprehensive with MOTs, apart from 1986, going back to 1981. We understand that the latest certificate is likely to have been freshly renewed by sale day.
