Associated Motor Cycles early post war trials machinery differed very little from the production machines, however, by 1950 AJS and Matchless recognised the need to expend more effort in the trials field and consequently set about developing a more specialised machine. Among the many changes from the standard machines specification were the adoption of an alloy cylinder and head requiring different hole centres in the crankcases, a revised exhaust system that followed a tighter line and shorter chainstays for the revised subframe. A Lucas "Wader" magneto provided the sparks.
Fifty machines were built of each capacity and by each manufacturer, resulting in a total of two hundred motorcycles of which one hundred and twenty were exported with the remainder being supplied to selected riders ensuring success for the model and consequently strong demand for the model the following year, when it became available in greater numbers to lesser mortals!
The basis for this example was acquired as part of a large collection of AMC parts by the vendor, who, on delivery discovered a log book for the machine. Research on the part of the vendor into the 1950 AMC trials models, including the examination of existing machines, together with sifting through the assorted components unearthed many of the original competition parts enabling the restoration of the machine to begin.
It is presented today in very good condition and is arguably one of the most original machines of its type surviving. The machines restoration was described in the June 1999 edition of the VMCC Journal, a copy of which accompanies this rare machine as does a Swansea V5.
